US Track & Field Championships

635710327542320722-USP-TRACK-AND-FIELD-USA-CHAMPIONSHIPS-74127556[1]

1500 metres – Meeting Record Alan Webb 3:34.82 (2007)

1. Matt Centrowitz 3:37.25

2. Robby Andrews 3:38.75

3. Leonel Manzano 3:38.76

4. Ben Blenkenship 3:38.78

The brutal American system of first three past the post, caught out Ben Blankenship in his breakthrough season. Centrowitz was going away at the finish, as three athletes strained for World Championship qualification.

Another unlucky athlete was Georganne Moline, one of the best 400 metres hurdlers in the world. She chopped her stride going into a hurdle and crashed to the track. A dream gone in a flash.

In the women’s 1500 metres, two seconds separated the first ten, as Jenny Simpson just beat Shannon Rowbury.

The real shocker was Olympic 400 metres champion Sanya Richards-Ross failing to make the final!

British Mile Age Record

Set a British age 15 mile record of 4:17.8 in a British Milers Club race in Harlow, becoming one of the youngest runners ever to break four minutes for 1500 metres, with a split time of 3:59.8. After a long season you often see athletes struggling to hold their form in late August. I wonder how I put together two record-breaking performances so late in the year. I also remember 1970 for breaking three barriers. Two minutes for 800 metres (1:57.0), four minutes for 1500 metres (3:59.8) and nine minutes for 3000 metres (8:48.8). The 800 metres was done on November 11 at Crystal Palace!

European Athletics Team Championships

Commonwealth Games champion Eilidh Child had her best run of the season as she won the 400 metres hurdles in a European leading 54.46. Two athletes at university in America, Oli Aitchison and Rhianwedd Price, made their GB debuts in the 1500 metres. Both ran with maturity and guts that was great to see. Aitchison had to come wide in the home straight to pass a crowd of athletes, to finish third, as the first seven ran 3:52. Price grabbed hold of the lead after a very slow first 400, and led until 200 to go, and could have have been swallowed up by the pack in the home straight, but fought back to also take third in 4:16.59. This follows her NCAA title a week ago. Great Britain finished fifth.
