After switching from the heptathlon, Dafne Schippers has become the Flying Dutchwoman. She took gold in 21.63, a Dutch and European record. Only Florence Griffith-Joyner and Marion Jones have ever run faster! Elaine Thompson was a close second in a PB 21.66. Dina Asher-Smith took fourth in her third championship PB, breaking Kathy Cook’s 31 year-old British record with 22.07. She becomes the world’s fastest ever teenager!

It looked like Shara Proctor had secured gold in the 3rd round with a British record and barrier breaking 7.07m. Then Tianna Bartoletta snatched victory with a last jump of 7.14. It had been ten years since the American had first become World champion. Katarina Johnson Thompson failed to make the last eight and called it the worst week of her life.

Some thought Bolt might withdraw from the 200, but again he laid his reputation on the line and again the result was the same. Bolt over Gatlin in 20.55 world lead.

during day six of the 15th IAAF World Athletics Championships Beijing 2015 at Beijing National Stadium on August 27, 2015 in Beijing, China.

Allyson Felix seemed to glide to a 400 metres PB/World lead 49.26 to break a tie with Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson for the most gold medals ever by an American at the World Championships. Nine!

Christain Taylor won the triple jump with the second longest mark ever, 8.21. In the stands Jonathon Edwards, who jumped the World record 8.29 twenty years ago, had a stunned expression until it was measured just short of the WR.

It was one of the most competitive fields at these championships and outside of Usain Bolt, Genzebe Dibaba would have felt the most pressure to get gold. She had just set the World record and now everyone expected her to win. She has done the first part of a rare and difficult 1500/5000 double. Laura Muir has had a difficult start to her international career and came good to make the final and finish fifth in front of new American record-holder Shannon Rowbury and former World champion Jenny Simpson, who lost a shoe and finished 11th.

The 400 metres was the first time that three athletes had broken 44 seconds. Defending champion Merritt ran a PB 43.65 and only got silver. The champion van Nickert left the stadium on a stretcher after his 43.48 South African record (4th all-time). The Olympic champion James, could only take bronze with 43.78.

Rabah Yousif had never broken 45 until his semi final PB 44.54 (7th UK all-time). He impressed again to finish 6th in 44.68.

Greg Rutherford joins Daley Thompson, Linford Christie, Sally Gunnell and Jonathon Edwards as the only British athletes ever to win the Grand Slam of Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth titles. His 6.41 was his second best jump ever, behind his British record 6.51 and a stadium record. You can understand his frustration with the talk of him being “lucky” to have won the Olympic title and not jumping far enough. It really answers the critics.

After an injury hit two years, the popular David Rudisha, Olympic champion and World record-holder, returns to the top with a controlled victory where he had all the answers.

The Kenyans worked as a team to try and break Farah, but he showed a steely determination to win in a fast 27:01 in hot and humid conditions. As Galen Rupp faded from third to fifth in the last lap, Mo confirmed his postion as one of Britain’s greatest ever athletes.

At the London Anniversary Games Jess was not even sure about competing in Beijing. She said later that she would have settled for a bronze. She showed all the mystic of an Olympic champion to do the “impossible.” She also showed real class, in the middle of competition, as she hugged Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who suffered the nightmare of three fouls in the long jump.

Usain Bolt had struggled with injury, hardly raced all season, and had run some awful times. You kept waiting for him to announce that he would not be going to Beijing. He had everything to lose and nothing to gain. He stumbled coming out of the blocks in the semi-final and almost missed qualifying for the final. You had a sense of impending doom. He called the victory the “hardest race” of his career. As Gatlin sensed he might finally get beaten, he started dipping for the line too early and lost his form. Bolt pulled off a miracle victory, just!
