Youngsters Breakthrough

451437666[1]

A trio of twenty year-olds won their first senior British titles. At opposite ends of their career Emelia Gorecka and Jo Pavey (40) battled to the finish line, both recording 15:40 after Pavey had led nearly the whole 5000 metres.
It’s fine topping the rankings, but Charlie Grice delivered when it counted, with a 3:46.97 1500 metres victory that saw two athletes fall, securing his place in the Europeans.
After a cruel injury in the British Olympic Trials which saw her miss London 2012, Jodie Williams has slowly made her way back. After winning the 200 metres in 22.79, just outside her PB, she said that this feels like her first senior season. She finished third in the 100 metres the following day.
European 800 metres champion Lynsey Sharp looked strong as she drove for the line in 2:01.40, with Alison Leonard a surprise second, a still on the comeback trail Jenny Meadows third and a disappointed Jess Judd fading to fourth.
Against the odds, Dwain Chambers (36) saw off his younger rivals to win an eighth 100 metres British title in 10.12, getting the European qualifying time at last. This season’s revelation and top British ranked Chijindu Uja was third in 10.18.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson, world number one ranked heptathlete, finished second in the high jump and won the long jump in a PB 6.81 to go equal fifth on the UK all-time list with Jade Johnson. She will compete in the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games and either the high jump or long jump at the European Championships.

ASHER-SMITHDINA-3-Loboro5-14-437x282[1]

In the World Junior Championship Trials at Bedford, Dina Asher-Smith won the 100 metres on day one in 10.11, which would have broken Jodie Williams British Junior record if it was not wind assisted. She followed it up on day two by winning the 200 metres in 22.74, just missing Kathy Cook’s 1979 British Junior record 22.70 set 35 years ago at altitude in Mexico City. Asher Smith, 18, is the European Junior 100 and 200 metres champion and got a bronze medal in the 4×100 metres relay at last summer’s World Championships in Moscow.
David Omoregie broke the British and European record, winning the 110 metres hurdles in 13.17 and Heptathlete Morgan Lake won the long jump in 6.11

94e4b9d5-ef64-4686-8b66-dc8321a54f4d[1]

In the 53rd Ostrava Golden Spike, Genzebe Dibaba just missed the 2000 metres World record of 5:25.36 set by Sonia O’Sullivan twenty years ago. She was right on schedule at halfway in 2:42, but had to run the last 800 metres on her own for third on the all-time list in 5:27.50. She won the race by seven seconds from Senbera Teferi.
In the 3000 metres Nick Willis set a New Zealand record of 7:36.91, breaking John Walker’s 31 year-old time set at London’s Crystal Palace. Caleb Ndiku won in a world lead 7:31.66.
