Commonwealth Games champion Eilidh Child had her best run of the season as she won the 400 metres hurdles in a European leading 54.46. Two athletes at university in America, Oli Aitchison and Rhianwedd Price, made their GB debuts in the 1500 metres. Both ran with maturity and guts that was great to see. Aitchison had to come wide in the home straight to pass a crowd of athletes, to finish third, as the first seven ran 3:52. Price grabbed hold of the lead after a very slow first 400, and led until 200 to go, and could have have been swallowed up by the pack in the home straight, but fought back to also take third in 4:16.59. This follows her NCAA title a week ago. Great Britain finished fifth.

In a letter to Athletics Weekly, track & field statistician Stan Greenberg said that the Sepp Blatter scandal would be a minor story if football was subject to the same drug testing as athletics. He accused the Daily Mail of hypocrisy for devoting so much space to the Salazar controversy.

In 1965 every World record from 1K to 1 hour was broken. Ron Clarke was Track & Field News athlete of the year and Dick Drake said, “No athlete in a single year…has destroyed so exhaustively and so repeatedly so many world records.”

Clarke set his first World record on January 16 with 13:34.8 for 5000 metres in Hobart. He set WR’s 11 times in eight events from 2 miles to one hour.

On July 10, at London’s White City Stadium, the “rolling thunder from down under,” became the first athlete to break 13 minutes for 3 miles with 12:52.4. In a 44 day European tour, competing 18 times, he redefined distance running.
