Commonwealth Games

The 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games 1500 metres final was called, “the greatest middle distance race of all – time.” New Zealand’s John Walker broke the World record with 3:32.52 only to take silver. Filbert Bayi took gold in 3:32.16 beating Jim Ryun’s 3:33.1, set in 1967. Ben Jipcho almost broke the WR with his Kenyan record 3:33.16 bronze medal. There were five national records, with Brendan Foster breaking the British record in seventh place! Bayi blasted the first lap in 54 and never let up, going through 800 metres in 1:51, as the rest of the field became spectators, thinking he would come back to them. He never did, timing it perfectly to the finish. It happened 40 years ago and maybe only one race has surpassed it – the London 2012 Olympic 800 metres final.
