Kentucky and Louisville Make Sweet Sixteen

Kentucky become the first team in the history of college basketball to go 36-0. John Wooden’s UCLA teams of the 60’s and 70’s were 30-0. Indiana went 32-0 in 1976. Wichita State were 35-0 last year until they were beaten by Kentucky.

After Louisville beat Northern Iowa 66-53, coach Rick Pitino said, “Tonight, we played our best game of the season.” It’s the first time the Cardinals have reached the Sweet Sixteen for the fourth consecutive year.

Louisville meet NC State, who knocked out number one seed Villanova. Kentucky take on West Virginia.

Louisville had one of those opening round games that gives you nightmares. The number 13 seed starts playing like the number 4 seed, and the number four seed is fighting for their life. Louisville just held on for the 57-55 win over UC Irvine. The Wildcats (35-0) play Cincinnati (23-10) tonight and the Cardinals (23-8) take on Northern Iowa (31-3) tomorrow, for a place in the Sweet Sixteen.

Kentucky Off And Running

Kentucky beat Hampton 79-56. Of course they did, but sport is never that simple. Five games were decided by one point. The most since the NCAA expanded to 64 teams in 1985, and the most on any single day in tournament history! The biggest upset in the history of college basketball happened in 1982 when a small university in Hawaii, Chaminade, beat the number one team Virginia, who were led by three-time national player of the year, Ralph Sampson. The newspapers in Honolulu carried the headlines, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Chaminade!”
Kentucky will be relieved to get this one out of the way.
