Brussels Diamond League/Memorial Van Damme

In 1976, just months after winning silver medals in the 800 and 1500 metres at the Montreal Olympics, Ivo Van Damme was killed in a car crash, aged 22, returning from a training session in the South of France. He had started running at 17 and also finished fourth in the 1973 European Junior Championships 800 metres won by Steve Ovett.

Billed as an attempt on the World record of 4:12.56, Faith Kipyegon won in an African record of 4:16.71, the fastest women’s mile for 19 years. Sifan Hassan was always near the lead and looked to be headed for victory on the final lap, but had the consolation of a new national record of 4:18.20 in second.
