English Schools Championships

Did my first English Schools Track & Field Championships 45 years ago at Motspur Park, Surrey, July 4-5 1969. I finished fourth in the U/15 1500 metres final. It was here that Sydney Wooderson set the mile World record of 4:06.4 in 1937. At 18 he had become the first British schoolboy to break 4:30 and went on to coach Roger Bannister, who became the World’s first sub four-minute miler in 1954. In 1970 I ran a UK all-time age 15 mile record of 4:17.8. I think that Wooderson would have found it hard to comprehend that a 15 year-old could run a mile just over ten seconds outside his World record and also break the four-minute barrier for 1500 metres (3:59.8).
The first ESAA Championships were held at Crystal Palace in 1925. They will celebrate their 90th anniversary next year. This year’s Championships are being held at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, July 11-12.
