Farah Falls And Finishes Second

Farah Finishes Second

NYC 1/2

1. Geoffrey Mutai (KEN) 1:00:50
2. Mo Farah (GBR) 1:01:07
3. Stephen Sambu (KEN) 1:01:08

1. Sally Kipyego (KEN) 1:08:31 (course record)
2. Buzunesh Deba (ETH) 1:08:59
3. Molly Huddle (USA) 1:09:04

I had to smile when I saw the headline, ‘Mo Finishes Second And Fails To Break British Record.’ The race was done in temperatures just below freezing, Mo was tripped and fell just before 10K, the first 5K was slow and he passed out at the finish after feeling dizzy! It shows Mo’s ability to push himself to the limit and reminds people that it’s not a time trial, it’s a race with world class athletes trying to beat Mo. Mutai has been under 60 minutes six times. If he had won and broken his British record (60:59) with a sub one hour time, the hype leading up to the London Marathon would have been along the lines of Mo winning the London Marathon in a World record. Maybe this result was meant to be, and makes the expectations more realistic. Mo said later that he had blurred vision the last few miles but was feeling good. “I just tried so hard. It’s no big deal.” It’s also worth remembering that Mutai has actually run the fastest marathon ever, 2:03:02, but it was done in Boston, so does not qualify as an official time.
