I Shook Up The World

I Shook Up The World!

50 years ago the world woke up to a legend. On Febuary 25, 1964, Cassius Clay beat the fearsome Sonny Liston to become World heavyweight champion. In one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, the experts had not given the 22 year-old ‘Louisville Lip’ a chance,
fearing for the young boxer against one of the hardest hitters ever. Clay rounded on his critics with those immortal words, “I shook up the world. I shook up the world. I’m the Greatest.” A week later he changed his name to Muhammad Ali and became the most visible spokesman for the civil rights movement. Later he refused to be drafted into the Vietnam War, going to prison and losing his heavyweght crown, only to return in triumph. He was the 1960 Olympic champion and the first three-time World heavyweight champion and was voted Athlete of the 20th Century. He lit the flame at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was the most recognisable face on the planet. There was nobody like Muhammad Ali. He helped pave the way for Barack Obama to become America’s first black President. The Muhammad Ali Center was opened in Louisville, Kentucky on November 22, 2005.
