Genzebe Dibaba set her third World record in 15 days by taking six seconds off Meseret Defar’s 2009 time with 9:00.48, just missing the outdoor World record by two seconds! Laura Muir won the 1500 metres in 4:05.32 to go second on the UK all-time indoor list, with only Kelly Holmes 2003 4:02.66 ahead off her. Andrew Osagie came 4th in 800 metres and also went second on the UK all-time indoor list in 1:45.53, behind Sebastian Coe’s 1:44.91 set 31 years ago at RAF Cosford.
Renaud Lavillenie broke Sergey Bubka’s 21 year-old pole vault World record with 6.16 and also beat Bubka’s 1994 outdoor World record, with Bubka watching in his home city of Donetsk, Ukraine.
At the Millrose Games in New York, Bernard Lagat won the first Paavo Nurmi 2000 metres in an American record 4:54.73 breaking Steve Scott’s 33 year-old record of 4:58.6. Second was the fastest ever by a Canadian, indoors or outdoors, as Cam Levins went 4:55.35. Third, fourth and fifth places were also under Scott’s old record! In the Wanamaker Mile Will Lear set a lifetime best of 3:52.47 to take victory, with Lawi Lalang beating Chris O’Hare’s NCAA record set last year with a 3:52.88. O’Hare finished 5th in 3:54.66 and Alan Webb was 11th in his farewell race clocking 4:06.11
