What a glorious year 1954 was for Chris Chataway and British Athletics. Along with Chris Brasher, he paces Roger Bannister to a World record, barrier breaking, historic sub four – minute mile. Breaks the World record for 5000 metres, beating Vladimir Kuts at London’s White City stadium. Kuts was the former World record holder and had beaten Chataway to the European title two weeks earlier. Wins gold in the Commonwealth Games 3 miles and becomes the the first BBC Sports Personality! Bannister, Brasher and Chataway were the Coe, Cram and Ovett of their era.
